Q. counting for the spin of the ball, too!! we want to measure its location from the side of the table. i'm trying to measure the distance of the ball from the table side. in order to that, i need to stop the ball and then measure the distance by a laser. i can't measure the distance while the ball is moving. i want to find out how much did it deflect from it is original position when the ball was hit. i hope that clear things up!! Well, first of all it is a 2 dimensional table so you are going to have to have two reference numbers, collect them in sequence and graph or computer analyze to get the formula of the curve. This will require a pair of laser range finders or image capture and analysis. Are you testing the table or analyzing the ball path of a shot. If you are only doing a few things, you might put a very light dusting of chalk on the table and measure the faint line of the ball in the chalk at various points. You could pull a string line and measure from that straight line.
