How to heat a pool without a pool heater?
Q. I'm having a pool party next weekend November 7th 2009. My pool shaded by trees and etc. So the pool isn't being warmed up by the sun. I don't have enough money to buy a pool and I can't cover the pool in black because it won't obtain any heat because the sun won't be shining on it. Can someone please help me find a inexpensive way to heat my swimming pool?

Why would my Hayward Pool Vac suddenly cause a significant reduction in filtration PSI?
Q. PSI through my pool filtration system has suddenly dropped significantly from 10-15 PSI to less than 5 PSI when my Hayward Pool Vac is attached. I believe the Vac does typically reduce PSI slightly, in the 10 PSI range, but not to the extreme it is now. This problem started only over the last couple of days. If I remove the vac, from the end of the hose, PSI returns to normal. I did an initial inspection of the Vac, and did not see any obstructions, though I would not rule that out. Is this a common problem?

A. It can be. Larger objects can get stuck in the turbine gear and both reduce water flow (which would also show as the decrease in filter pressure you're experiencing), and it may also slow down the movement of the head unit. We're you noticing that as well? There are exploded diagrams on the Hayward website that can help with disassembling and cleaning the unit. Check the turbine gears while you're doing this; if they have sand in them, they can slow down the unit and cause flow problems. Also, check the hoses (while the head unit is attached and the pump running) to see if any sections are collapsing at all. This is a common problem as well. And yes, you are correct; there should be a noticeable difference in filter pressure when… [cont.]

Does my pool have a leak or is it just water evaporation?
Q. I've noticed here the past couple weeks that my pool has lost water, could it be a leak or just evaporation? Can having my pool cover on cause it to evaporate more? My pool is not on an entirely level place either. It's a 16 foot easy set pool btw. Also, how much water should I expect to lose on a weekly basis to evaporation? Location: Indiana Average temperature: (air) 85-90? It's a 16 foot pool. I'm not sure about how much water it loses on a weekly basis.

A. Normal evaporation is 1/8" in winter and close to 1/4" in summer, per day. Temperature, humidity and wind all bear on evaparation rates and a cover at first seems to be an ideal solution unless you have children and pets, even neighbors pets and any wildlife looking for a drink of water. Unsecured covers will envelope anything that falls on the cover. Rocks, block and bricks do not secure a plastic cover. Fully secured covers cost a lot of money but offer peace of mind. Covers also obscure your view of the water and is vary important in maintaining any pool since your first clue usually is it looks funny. You're welcome!!
